Music

I am a singer/songwriter, mantra music artist and yoga teacher. My passion is sharing what I have learned on my spiritual journey to uplift and inspire others.

During my yoga journey, I fell in love with kirtan (the singing of mantras and divine names), and the joy and bliss I discovered from this practice led me to write my own songs that came from deep within my soul. My music invites you into my personal journey of healing, growth and self-discovery. My deepest intention is that it brings upliftment, joy and empowerment to everyone who listens to it.

Revealed

Creating my album Revealed was an integral part of my healing journey. The lyrics in my songs reflect the paradox of the spiritual path: we are blissful divine beings, yet we are painfully human at the same time. I believe we all wrestle inside with the Higher Self wanting to be expressed in its purest and holiest form, yet we encounter obstacles in the form of our “smaller” self, or ego, that creates doubts and fears. For me, this showed up in my life as a struggle to believe in myself and love and accept myself as I am, and to let go of the need for approval and validation from others.

The album was recorded, mixed, mastered and released over a period of five very intense but deeply rewarding months in 2016. As part of the production, I created a CD jacket with the lyrics to all my songs, both in English and the mantras in Sanskrit, printed along with beautiful artwork by Jesus Martinez. This was designed so the listener could follow along and sing the mantras along with me as empowering anthems. I know CDs are now “old school,” but I guess in this vein I’m an old school girl! If you would like to purchase a copy for yourself or someone you love who would benefit from hearing my songs, reach out to me! I will sign it with love…and mail it to you myself!

In addition to singing and performing my own kirtan and devotional music, over the past several years I’ve also explored other musical paths and artistic expression through singing with two other bands. With B432 (a psychedelic rock band reminiscent of the Doors, Pink Floyd etc.), we released a live studio album in 2020 entitled “The Love Frequency Band.” The album was recorded live over a weekend at Farmadelica Recording Studio in Pine Island, FL. You can find this album on iTunes and listen on all major streaming platforms. During that same time, I formed a 80s classic alternative/new wave cover band, The Love Cats. We covered songs by Depeche Mode (my favorite band of all time!), The Cure, New Order, and many other incredible bands from that era, and had a few performances in and around Naples. In 2022, I started writing music again and released two new singles, “Burn” and “Now,” which you can find on iTunes and all major streaming platforms!

 Album Reviews & Praise

  • Missy Balsam’s self-titled CD is a testament to her love of chanting. I first heard these chants live in her yoga classes at Bhakti Fest Midwest. Her bhakti flow was a great class. It was the first time I ever experienced students being encouraged to sing along with the music playing in class—all uplifting kirtan. What enthusiasm and fun!

Missy Balsam, I can’t wait to hear what your next venture will be! I can’t stop chanting your first chant “Narayana (I Am All I Need.)” It’s got a bit of an edge to it; think the positive affirmations of Alana Morissette. When do we stop looking outside for validation? Let’s take our power back. I am all I need!

  • Missy Balsam’s Revealed—her first studio release is a spiritual rocker! Hailing from South Florida, Missy is Shakti Ma—all Divine Female Power. The first track, titled “Shakti Ma,” is dynamic, an anthemic chant to the Power of the Goddess! Electric guitars and pounding drums identify the rock ‘n’ roll poetry. Missy’s poetic wildness calls forth rock royalty along the lines of PJ Harvey. “Speak your truth” is catchy, bluesy and pertinent: “Speak your truth, just be real, say what’s on your mind.” A great message and a great reminder. The band has a great sound and serves the songs well. Missy’s clear alto is a delight, adding her mission to share her soulful words with the world. I am moved by Missy’s authentic voice, reaching out with her words that she is the “true self” in “Shiva.” Missy teaches yoga and invites students to chant mantras in her class during practice. Talk about uniting breath and movement! Really rockin,’ really great, all around!

  • Missy,

You are a precious soul! Thank you for your wonderful CD. That first track sounds like Talking Heads “Burning Down the House!” You take some wonderful artistic journeys on the CD. Congratulations for an effort well taken! Revealed is a beautiful expression of talent, creativity and spirituality. Everything you have done on this album is worthy and you should feel happiness and satisfaction for having created it and toured with it.

    Love and blessings,

  • I am happy to say, the latest kirtan release by Missy Balsam is a wonderful addition to the many kirtan albums I hear, as a result of sharing them over the airwaves as a producer/announcer for radio station WRPI in Troy, NY.

"Revealed" is vibrant and alive. Missy channels her own energy and has created a unique album that mirrors her own aliveness. It is raw, rockish and real. Missy infuses all her songs with a dynamic sound through her powerful voice and band. I suggest you listen to each song and feel the power and love flowing through. Some of my favorites are "Shakti Ma," "Speak Your Truth," "Shyam," and "Shiva." All of these songs are odes to surrender yet be true to yourself. Try them on for yourselves.
